New Energy Meters with Wireless Interface supporting the LoRaWAN® Protocol

Wireless Technology for Efficient Energy Data Collection

E-Bus

FIT FOR IOT

A number of innovative solutions are currently available in the energy sector which help conserve energy resources and maximize energy efficiency. Within this context, the Internet of Things (IoT) is becoming increasingly important because it not only makes it possible to optimize energy consumption with the help of smart IoT sensors, it helps to reduce costs as well.

IoT-based energy management offers the option of networking devices with each other and using sensors to collect and monitor energy consumption data – often in real time. Some IoT applications feature wireless communication, and thus necessitate the technologies required to this end. Amongst currently available networking technologies, the LoRaWAN® standard (long range wide area network) is coming into focus to an ever-greater extent. This standard makes it possible to transmit sensor data efficiently and securely over long distances with minimal energy consumption.

Use in Numerous Applications

In particular for decentralized energy data acquisition and IoT applications in industrial and municipal environments, Gossen Metrawatt is expanding its multifunctional energy meters from the ENERGYMID range with a wireless interface based on the LoRaWAN® standard. ENERGYMID LPWAN energy meters supporting the LoRaWAN® protocol have been developed for a variety of applications in the field of energy management, energy data collection and billing. They’re ideally suited for decentralized energy data collection in locations without cable-based communication, for mobile metering points such as construction site power distributors or compact distributors, and for integration into existing LoRaWAN® networks.

Use in Numerous Applications

Convenient Work without Cabling for Communication

CONVENIENT WORK WITHOUT CABLING FOR COMMUNICATION

Based on LoRa (long range) wireless technology, the LoRaWAN® protocol offers several advantages such as an extensive transmission range, secure encryption, bidirectional communication and significant cost savings. The most important advantages provided by ENERGYMID LPWAN energy meters include easy installation and the elimination of the costs and time required for installing communication lines.

CUT COSTS

ENERGYMID LPWAN energy meters can be easily integrated into the IoT landscape thanks to the LoRaWAN® protocol. No communication lines or cabling are required, thus resulting in significant cost savings and reduced personnel requirements, wireless energy data collection – simple and cost-effective.

WIRELESS SOFTWARE UPDATES

As a special feature included with ENERGYMID LPWAN energy meters, interface functions can be conveniently and securely updated – wirelessly via FUOTA (firmware update over the air)[1].

[1] A FUOTA-compatible backend is required in order to make use of FUOTA functionality. This backend is not provided by Gossen Metrawatt GmbH and must be implemented by the customer.

Security Thanks to Encrypted Communications

SECURITY THANKS TO ENCRYPTED COMMUNICATIONS

The energy meters supporting the LoRaWAN® protocol fulfill the most stringent security standards for data communication. Encryption for data transmission is based on the AES method and takes place at two levels – the network level and the application level. A join procedure using a security key (AppKey) ensures secure integration.
